A short film is defined by its length and has no codes and conventions. Their is not any specific characteristics but the time length, which is the biggest difference, hence the name "Short Film". Short film is a category of film not a genre and even though their is no set rules or conventions for a short film that act as a rule book there are ways to define one and separate one from a feature length film and restrictions whilst aspiring to make one. The majority of short film very in genre and mostly hold and experimental and "crazy" narrative using captivating images and shots to make audience step back and view what ever topic being demonstrated in a different light. It is the medium for innovation and is also used as a safety net for directors giving the the opportunity to try out a style of film before risking a huge budget making a feature length film which a narrative and style of film with out knowing how a mass audience may react.
Most short films are Amateur films with a small cast that aim to project a message or tell a story in an experimental way. the majority of short films made by amateur film makers are grainy and gritty and hit near enough reality in a effective way. Short film can always be made in any genre but mainly started in documentary. The first film in history was a short film.

and Gareth Evans a director, editor and writter of both short film and feature length film describes short films as "a good idea, succincely told" and feels that "short films are long films that finish early".
